A previous version of this story incorrectly stated the number of active cases in the Island Health region as the new COVID-19 cases reported for the region over the weekend. The correct number of new cases is 681.

British Columbia health officials have reported 5,625 new COVID-19 cases, including 681 linked to Island Health, and 22 deaths since their last update on Jan. 14.

Of the new deaths recorded over the past 72 hours, three were in the Island Health region.

Daily case breakdown:

Jan. 14-15: 2,383 new cases
Jan. 15-16: 1,733 new cases
Jan. 16-17: 1,509 new cases

The number of confirmed cases in B.C. is now at 299,146 while the death toll climbs to 2,490.

There are currently 35,985 active cases in the province, including 2,068 in Island Health. There are also 819 people in hospital across the province — a 53 per cent increase from Friday’s figure — 99 of whom are in intensive care.

Although hospitalizations soared over the weekend, some of that can be attributed to a change in reporting. Starting Jan. 13, the figure has been changed to bed census data.

A total of 257,677 people in B.C. have recovered from COVID-19 while 10,108,113 doses of vaccine have been administered province-wide.

Editor’s note: The number of active cases is likely much higher due to restrictions and capacity limits when it comes to testing. B.C. health officials have also discouraged many people from getting tested, instead advising them to stay home until they feel better.

New data from B.C. health officials shows that fully vaccinated individuals account for 77.3 per cent of all new cases recorded between Jan. 7 and Jan. 13, while unvaccinated individuals account for 18.8 per cent of cases recorded during that time.

Furthermore, fully vaccinated individuals accounted for 66.3 per cent of all hospitalizations recorded in B.C. between Dec. 31 while unvaccinated individuals accounted for just 29 per cent of hospitalizations recorded during the same period.
