A public inquest will begin May 21 in the 2016 death of Bradley Gregory Martins Graham, who was found unresponsive in his cell.

The BC Coroners Service says Graham, 33, died March 6, 2016 at Victoria General hospital after he was transferred from the Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Centre.

The service said Thursday the chief coroner is permitted to hold an inquest of circumstances surrounding a death if the public has an interest in being informed.

A jury will hear from witnesses to determine the facts surrounding Graham’s death and can make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.

The coroners’ service says the jury will not determine legal responsibility.

Coroner Larry Marzinzik will preside over the inquest at the Victoria Law Courts on Burdett Avenue.
