Port Hardy RCMP says a recent backyard shed fire is suspicious and an arson investigation is now underway.

A recent backyard shed fire in Port Hardy appears to have been set deliberately, police say.

During the evening hours on May 21, Port Hardy RCMP officers and Port Hardy Fire Rescue crews responded to a fully-involved backyard shed fire in Gwa’Sala-‘Nakwaxda-xw’s Indigenous community.

“Crews did great work with exposure protection and keeping the fire from extending to a nearby house,” Port Hardy Fire Rescue said on social media.

Although firefighters were able to keep the blaze from spreading, the nearby home’s exterior suffered extensive damage.

Nobody was hurt in the blaze.

The cause of the fire is unclear, however, Port Hardy RCMP said it is considered suspicious and an arson investigation is underway.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Port Hardy RCMP at 250-949-6335 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
