The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating after RCMP in Tofino responded to a report of a fight in a parking lot on July 11.

On July 12, the RCMP notified the IIO of an incident that occurred on July 11 at approximately 8:45 p.m., where officers responded to a call regarding a fight in a parking lot in the 50-block of Hyoh Eah Road.

The IIO said when officers arrived, they advised one man that he was under arrest. The man was then taken into custody.

During his interaction with police, the man indicated he was injured and Emergency Health Services paramedics were called to transport him to a local hospital, the IIO said.

The man was then transferred to a larger area hospital for further treatment. He subsequently left the hospital.

The IIO will investigate to determine what role, if any, the officers’ actions or inaction may have played into the injuries sustained by the man.

The IIO is asking that any person who saw, heard or recorded the incident to contact the IIO Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477.

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
