B.C. reports another 375 cases of COVID-19, 3 deaths in Island Health

Health officials in B.C. are reporting 375 new cases of COVID-19 and seven deaths, a day after their last update on Tuesday.

Three of the deaths occurred in Island Health, three in Fraser Health and one in Vancouver Coastal Health. The Island Health region’s death toll now stands at 122, with 111 occurring this year and 81 having been reported since Aug. 16.

Of the new cases, 98 were reported in Fraser Health, 70 were reported in Vancouver Coastal Health, 69 in Interior Health, 62 in Northern Health and 76 in Island Health.

It increases the total number of cases in the province since the pandemic began to 218,801, while the death total rises to 2,340.

There are currently 2,936 active cases in the province, with 301 of those infected in hospital — 98 of whom are in ICU.

The Ministry of Health also reported that out of people eligible to receive a vaccine — which now includes those age five and older — 84.8 per cent have received their first dose while 81.7 per cent have received their second dose.

It said that from Nov. 23-29, people who weren’t fully vaccinated accounted for 58.2 per cent of new cases, while they accounted for 68.1 per cent of hospitalizations from Nov. 16-29.

The ministry reported that there were 569 active cases in the Island Health region as of Wednesday, while Island Health itself reported 491 active cases on its public dashboard. The case counts can differ due to a difference in reporting timeframes.

Island Health reported that out of the active cases, 163 were on the North Island, 213 on the Central Island and 115 on the South Island.

According to the BC Centre for Disease Control, there are currently 49 people in the Island Health region hospitalized for COVID-19, 15 of whom are in critical care.

Since the pandemic began, there have been 12,787 cases reported, 669 total hospitalizations, and 12,066 recoveries recorded on Vancouver Island.
