A new, seismically safe facility is on the way for children and families benefiting from the Children's Development Centre in Cordova Bay, along with additional support services.

A new, seismically safe facility is on the way for children and families at the Children’s Development Centre in Cordova Bay, the government said Wednesday.

“The Children’s Development Centre and its Alternate Learning Program are a vital resource for children in Saanich, and we’re making sure students and staff can benefit from it for decades to come,” said Rob Fleming, Minister of Education. “This unique facility serves some of the most vulnerable students in Saanich and we’re acting to ensure they have the modern, safe school they deserve.”

On Wednesday, the provincial government announced it will provide $3.7 million for a full replacement of the centre, in addition to a new facility that will offer mental health support for youth and families.

The Saanich Board of Education will also contribute $500,000 to the project.

“Programs at the Children’s Development Centre have made positive, impactful changes in the lives of countless students throughout our community,” said Lana Popham, MLA for Saanich South. “A brand new, safe facility is a welcome addition to Saanich, and I’m thrilled to see it being improved so it can continue to give our students the supports they need.”

Construction on the new Children’s Development Centre is scheduled to begin in spring 2020 and the hope is for it to be ready for students in September 2021.

The government outlines this is now one of 36 schools that have been issued funding for seismic upgrades since September 2017. The Province says there is $670 million for seismic projects across the 36 schools, creating more than 21,200 safe student seats.

The 53-year-old facility, that serves as a place to support those who have difficulty in traditional school settings, was found to be at risk in the event of an earthquake back in 2018, according to the government.
