Island Health

Another update from health officials and another death recorded in the Island Health region over the past 24 hours.

There have now been 13 COVID-related deaths in the region since Oct. 1 and 36 deaths since Sept. 1.

On a positive note, active cases in the region appear to be falling somewhat, at least according to both Island Health and the BCCDC’s active case count figures.

Currently, there are 433 active cases — 44 in North Island, 205 in Central Island and 184 in South Island — on Vancouver Island, according to the latest update from Island Health.

However, Forty-seven people in the region are currently in hospital, 29 of whom are in critical care.

Over the past 24 hours, there were 10,292 doses of vaccine administered on Vancouver Island. Of those doses, 24 were AstraZeneca, 1,446 were Moderna and 324 doses were Pfizer.

A total of 1,339,219 vaccine doses — 644,671 are second doses and 10,098 are “other” doses — have been administered on Vancouver Island, according to the BCCDC. This includes 34,374 doses of AstraZeneca, 377,337 doses of Moderna and 927,508 doses of Pfizer.

Since the pandemic began, there have been 9,998 cases reported, 84 deaths, 484 total hospitalizations, and 9,351 recoveries recorded on Vancouver Island.

Editor’s note: The BCCDC lists the active case count for Vancouver Island at 516, which is 83 more active cases than what Island Health has reported. There are often discrepancies between the figures due to “differences in reporting” timeframes between the two agencies.
