Willows Beach, one of the beaches affected by the overflow of wastewater

As Vancouver Island continues to weather the multiple storms, the Capital Regional District (CRD) is warning residents about wastewater overflow into the waters of popular public beaches.

Heavy rain caused combined stormwater and wastewater overflows along some shorelines in Greater Victoria during on Wednesday night, carrying into Thursday.

The areas affected are:

  • Between Rutland Road (Oak Bay) and Seaview Road (Saanich) including Cadboro Bay and Gyro Park.
  • Between Currie Road and Cattle Point Lookout Road, including Willows Beach in Oak Bay.

This also includes Loon Bay Park, Spoon Bay Park , Queens Park and Haynes Park, as well as any other water access points in the affected areas.

As a result of these discharges, the CRD is advising residents to avoid entering the waters along the affected shorelines, as the wastewater may pose a health risk.

In consultation with Island Health and the local municipalities, beaches within the affected areas will be posted with public health advisory signs as a precaution until sample results indicate enterococci levels are below the 70CFU/100mL recreational limit.

Any updates can be found on the CRD website.
