An 18-year-old who grew up in Nanaimo will be the next singer with Island roots to compete on this season of American Idol.

Cameron Whitcomb sang his rendition of Waylon Jennings’ “Rock, Salt and Nails” for the judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie during Monday’s episode.

While Richie ended up being a no vote, Whitcomb got a pair of yeses from Katy Perry and Luke Bryan to earn a golden ticket and a trip to Hollywood in the competition’s next round.

Whitcomb later admitted that his audition for the show was the first time he’d ever performed in front of strangers.

The 18-year-old grew up in Nanaimo before moving to Kamloops, where he currently resides.

Whitcomb’s success marks the second time in three seasons that a contestant from Nanaimo has been part of American Idol. He follows Lauren Spencer-Smith, who made it to the top 20 in 2020.
