A Colwood woman says she’d never seen a cougar on her property before Friday afternoon and hopes the first time will be the last.

She was walking her dog and heading to her home near the gravel pit off Veterans Memorial Parkway and Sooke Road when she spotted the big cat around 3:30 p.m.

She made it into the house and watched as the cougar wandered around her property.

The woman says her neighbour’s young daughter then walked into the adjoining yard, so she opened a door and started hollering at her to get back inside, which she did.

Then her small dog got out the door and started heading to where the cougar had last been seen, so she ran and grabbed it and rushed back into the house.

She says she went to call police and the BC Conservation Officers Service and the cougar was gone by the time she was done.

She estimates the cat was on her property for roughly 45 minutes.

It follows other reports of a cougar sighting around the gravel pit on Allendale Road on Monday.

Middle Earth Canine Academy located nearby offered up this advice on Facebook on Friday night.

“Everyone in the Colwood area, please be advised a cougar has been seen in the vicinity of Allendale Field over the past week and earlier this evening .Keep your dogs under control at all times, dogs will smell it before you can see it and we want everyone including the cougar to be okay.”
