West Shore RCMP have arrested an allegedly impaired driver after he was caught trying to flee the scene of a crash in Langford.

In a police report issued on Wednesday, RCMP say the incident took place on October 5 at around 6:20 p.m. when police received a report of a possible impaired driver.

One witness informed police that they were travelling on Finlayson Arm Rd when his vehicle was sideswiped by a 2009 Mercedes GL320.

The witness told police that the suspect got out of the Mercedes and had a brief conversation with him, asking to not call police.

After the driver got back in the Mercedes and took off, the witness called police and informed them the driver appeared under the influence of alcohol.

Following the incident involving the witness, the driver later drove the Mercedes off the road and into the bushes on Round Tree Road.

“West Shore RCMP frontline officers arrived on scene and caught the suspect as he was fleeing the scene, attempting to leave in another vehicle that had stopped to pick him up,” reads a statement in a police report.

West Shore RCMP say the driver is an 18-year old man and is a resident of the South Island.

He was arrested for impaired driving and issued an administrative driving prohibition, while the Mercedes was towed and impounded.

We want to thank several witnesses including the victim for calling police right away. Their actions along with the quick response by frontline officers meant the suspect could not get away, said Cst. Nancy Saggar, West Shore RCMP Media Relations Officer.

RCMP say that an investigation is ongoing, however, charges of impaired driving are expected.
