A woman from the Village of Alert Bay has died after contracting COVID-19, according to a CBC report Friday night.

CBC says the death is confirmed by ‘Namgis First Nation elected Chief Don Svanvik and Alert Bay Mayor Dennis Buchanan.

The report says the patient was transferred to Nanaimo following diagnosis.

Alert Bay is a picturesque village on Cormorant Island near Port McNeill and shares the island with the ‘Namgis First Nation.

There are about 1500 people who live in Alert Bay.

On April 13, Buchanan posted a video saying he had tested positive for COVID-19, saying “somebody has seen fit to bring it to this Island.”

Earlier this week on Facebook, Buchanan confirmed a cluster outbreak on Cormorant Island.

A local state of emergency that was due to end April 24 has been extended to May 1.
