NAV Canada says services are returning to normal following a telecommunications outage that affected air traffic in western Canada.

Earlier today, the agency responsible for overseeing air traffic in the country said it was working with its service provider, Zayo, to learn more.

“To ensure the safe movement of air traffic in Canadian airspace, arrivals and departures at some airports have been delayed,” NAV Canada says in a tweet. “NAV CANADA is actively engaging Zayo to ensure every effort is being made to restore their service as soon as possible and to understand restoration timelines.”

In an email to media, NAV Canada says services are returning to normal, but did not explain the cause of the outage. It did not confirm how many airports were affected.

Victoria Airport tells CHEK News it is not impacted by the NAV Canada outage.

This comes at the same time as WestJet is experiencing an IT outage that impacts its airport check-in, flight planning, and website and operations.

“We are working to restore service and encourage guests to arrive early and check their flight status due to delays with the check-in process at the airport,” WestJet says in a statement on its website.

WestJet flights out of Victoria Airport have been affected by the IT issues.

“YYJ has been affected by Westjet’s issues,” Victoria Airport said to CHEK News in an email. “There’s been some minor delays but local WestJet staff’s efforts have been to minimize impact to their customers.”

WestJet says some of the issues caused by the outage have been restored, but there continue to be issues with some of their services.

Victoria Airport did not have an estimate of how many WestJet flights had been affected.
