There was some big news to celebrate in Ahousaht this week as the Vancouver Island First Nation received funding for a new Big House.

A ceremony was held in the community Wednesday afternoon to announce the $8.3-million project that will be funded through the federal government’s Cultural Spaces in Indigenous Communities program.

The First Nation had submitted an application for a Big House — a cultural space used for governance and ceremonies — and recently learned they were successful.

There’s no word yet on when construction will begin.
