Another staff member at the Chartwell Malaspina Care Residence long-term care home in Nanaimo has tested positive for COVID-19.

Island Health said in a statement issued Saturday the infected staff member was identified through mass testing performed at the facility earlier this week and that the positive test was confirmed on Jan. 21.

It’s the facility’s second employee to test positive for the virus.

“This staff member was working on one of the previously identified outbreak units. The outbreak remains confined to two units on the first floor of the home. Communication with residents, families, and staff is ongoing,” Island Health said in a statement.

The health authority says the staff member is now isolating, contact tracing is underway and communication with staff and residents is ongoing.

Since the outbreak was declared at the Nanaimo care home, seven residents and two staff members have tested positive.

Two people associated with the care home have also died.
