Street cleaners were used in the first annual scrub-up event.

Victoria staff were joined by downtown employees to help clean the streets for the first annual scrub-up event.

The scrub-up event is one part of the city’s new “Our Dwntn” initiative to beautify, clean, and increase safety in downtown Victoria.

“We’re down here with all the local businesses and many of the residents who are here just trying to make the city a little bit more homey, more welcoming,” said Victoria Mayor Marianne Alto. “Just like you do with your home.”

The scrub-up event is the first event held as part of the revitalization plan. The plan also included funding for additional Victoria Police foot patrols, which have already started.

As part of the event, the city was handing out kits with a bucket, environmentally-friendly cleaning spray, rubber gloves, terry cloth rags, a wire brush and a gift certificate from 7-Eleven for a complimentary coffee or Slurpee.

“It’s really a community-building exercise,” said Jeff Bray, CEO of the Downtown Victoria Business Association. “It’s also a demonstration of some of the equipment that the city has, that really helps to keep our downtown clean.”

City staff attended the event using the street and sidewalk cleaners.
