A man arrested inside a Nanaimo coffee shop where another man was found dead has been charged with one count of second-degree murder.

According to court records available online, Crown prosecutors have charged 29-year-old James Carey Turok with second-degree murder in relation to the coffee shop death. Records showed that Turok had a bail hearing at 7:30 p.m. Sunday and it was decided he was to remain in custody.

Turok’s next court date is set for February 21st.

On Saturday morning, an adult male was found dead inside the Buzz Coffee House by RCMP officers conducting a wellness check. Another man found by officers inside the coffee shop was arrested.

Nanaimo RCMP have not publicly disclosed the man’s name but said in a press release Sunday that he remains in custody. They also said the crime was random as there appeared to be no evidence linking the individual arrested at the scene and the victim.

Forensic investigators spent Saturday and Sunday at the coffee shop again on Sunday searching for evidence, blocking off access to the coffee shop and other nearby businesses.

Nanaimo RCMP are asking anyone who was at the Buzz Coffee House on Saturday between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. to contact them.
