A pedestrian was killed in a crash south of Duncan Monday.

North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP were called to a single-vehicle crash around 11:25 a.m. Monday on the Trans-Canada Highway near Allenby Road, BC RCMP said in a press release Monday.

A commercial truck stopped just past the intersection and a person was found lying on the ground suffering from serious injuries, according to police.

RCMP say the person was pronounced dead at the scene. The vehicle driver remained on scene and is cooperating with investigators, according to police.

According to a tweet from Drive BC, the intersection of the highway at Allenby Rd. has been blocked due to the incident.

RCMP say northbound traffic is expected to shut down for several hours.

A traffic reconstructionist has been called to determine the cause of the collision, along with an investigator from the Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement, according to police.

Police are asking for witnesses and dashcam footage.

“Investigators are interested in any witnesses who saw the driving behaviour of this vehicle prior to it travelling through the intersection,” said Sgt. Chris Manseau of the BC RCMP in the statement.

The BC Coroners Service is also investigating to determine the person’s identity. Police say the person’s identity will not be released.

Police are asking witnesses who haven’t spoken to police to call North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP at 250-416-0352.
