Hundreds of pet owners in Nanaimo will soon be able to get a microchip for their four-legged friends.

The BC Pet Registry recently donated 500 microchips, worth nearly $6,300, to Helping Paws, a non-profit organization in Nanaimo that provides pet owners who need some financial support caring for their animals with services that include health check-ups and treatment, flea prevention and nail trimming.

According to a BC SPCA press release, the donated microchips will be allocated to lower-income pet owners who are looking to have proper pet identification for their animals.

“People love their pets and want to provide the best care possible for them,” BC SPCA senior manager Leon Davis said in a press release. “Helping lost pets return home safely is very important, so I know that this gift from the BC Pet Registry will really make a difference to Helping Paws and their clients.”

The BC Pet Registry was created by the BC SPCA in 2015 and is the first centralized database in Canada that helps reunite lost pets with their owners.
