44 COVID deaths over Family Day long weekend; five in Island Health

Health officials in B.C. have announced there were 44 deaths due to COVID over the Family Day long weekend in the province.

Five of those deaths were in Island Health, 17 in Vancouver Coastal Health, 11 in Fraser Health, seven in Interior Health, and four in Northern Health.

There are 688 people hospitalized with COVID-19 and 108 are in intensive care.

Over the four-day period, there were 2,103 new confirmed cases in the province, 337 of which were in Island Health.

The number of cases per day were:

  • Feb. 18-19: 631 new cases
  • Feb. 19-20: 571 new cases
  • Feb. 20-21: 424 new cases
  • Feb. 21-22: 477 new cases

The province no longer provides active case counts due to the low rate of testing.

In the other health authorities, there were 615 new cases in Fraser Health, 610 in Interior Health, 326 in Vancouver Coastal Health, 215 in Northern Health, and no new cases in people who normally reside outside of Canada.

In Island Health there are two health care facility outbreaks that have been declared over at Tsawaayuus Rainbow Gardens and Berwick on The Lake.

From Feb. 11-17, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 21.4 per cent of cases. From Feb. 4-17, they accounted for 32.0 per cent of hospitalizations.

Since December 2020, the Province has administered 11,281,350 doses of COVID vaccines.
