4.2 magnitude earthquake detected off Vancouver Island

A relatively minor earthquake rumbled off the west coast of Vancouver Island early Friday morning.

The 4.2 magnitude shaker was detected 168 kilometres southwest of Port Alice around 4:45 a.m.

The underwater quake shook at a depth of five kilometres, and no tsunami or damage is expected, according to Earthquakes Canada.

One person reported that they lightly felt the earthquake to Earthquakes Canada by 10 a.m. Friday.

The earthquake comes just one week after another earthquake rumbled off the coast of Vancouver Island in the same area.

On May 2, a magnitude 4.8 earthquake was detected about 40 kilometres southwest of where Friday’s earthquake occurred.
