One of Victoria’s biggest track and field events won’t be taking place this summer.
The 29th Annual Victoria International Track Classic was cancelled by organizers this weekend, reportedly due to a lack of funding from Sport Canada to put the event on and get all the athletes into the city. Victoria International Running Society President Chris Siver says the cancellation of the event is a disappointment for all involved. “Everyone in the boardroom was disappointed with the outcome,” Siver says, “but we’re working hard to ensure that the Track Classic returns to Victoria in 2018, bigger and better.” Siver also says there will be a replacement meet on the way for this summer, called the Twilight Meet. Details are still scarce, but Siver says it will highlight 800 and 1500 metre events for both men and women.
