An Oak Bay driver behind the wheel of his mother’s vehicle is out hundreds of dollars in fines after speeding nearly 100 kilometres an hour on Beach Drive, according to police.

Last Monday, June 27, a police officer conducting speed enforcement in the 900-block, near the Victoria Golf Club, was caught off-guard by a loud revving sound, Oak Bay Police said in a news release.

That’s when the officer spotted and pulled over a vehicle travelling 97 km/h in a posted 40 km/h zone, a speed laser confirmed.

The driver, a 20-year-old man, had two passengers in the vehicle and was issued a $368 fine for excessive speeding. The car was also impounded for seven days.

But for Oak Bay Police, the coastal road is notorious for nabbing speeders.

Just one day prior, a 35-year-old motorcyclist was caught going 108 km/h in a 40 km/h zone along Beach Drive.

After being issued a $483 excessive speed ticket, the driver’s motorcycle was impounded for seven days, according to police.

Urging drivers to slow down, ICBC calls speeding a “major contributing factor” to car crash fatalities in B.C. and finds around 12 people are killed in speed-related crashes on Vancouver Island each year.

The corporation’s website highlights fines and points for driving offences in B.C., including speeding and distracted driving.

“The faster you go, the longer it takes to stop — and the more dangerous a crash can be,” added ICBC.

“It’s not worth the risk to yourself, and to others.”
