If you’ve added stargazing to your list of growing hobbies in isolation, then last night’s supermoon didn’t disappoint.
The full moon in April has become known as the ‘pink moon,’ in reference to an early-blooming wildflower called the ground phlox. As it turns out, it was also a supermoon – the third one of 2020.
Supermoons occur when a full moon appears during the point of its orbit that is closest to Earth. That results in the moon seeming bigger and brighter in the night sky.
Despite already having experienced two supermoons in 2020 so far, Tuesday night’s spectacle brought the moon closer to Earth than the other two and experts are saying it will be the largest moon we see this year.
Although the name suggests a pink hue, the April moon has a tendency to seem more golden due to an atmospheric effect as it rises high above the horizon.
Lucky for us on Vancouver Island, we had crystal clear conditions throughout the night and Islanders across the Rock were able to bask in the extra-large golden glow.
