One man is in hospital after an assault involving a knife early Sunday morning.

According to Nanaimo RCMP, two men were walking in the 100 block of Commercial Street after leaving a nearby nightclub. Police said the men then encountered a homeless individual who confronted them.

All three individuals were involved in an altercation and police later found one of the men unresponsive and lying on the ground. Police said the alleged assault happened around 2:30 a.m. A 38-year-old man was later arrested for assault with a weapon (knife), assault causing bodily harm and uttering threats. The suspect also had injuries but did not require medical attention.

The suspect has been released on a promise to appear in court on July 25. The victim was in hospital overnight and his condition is unknown.

“Given the location of the incident, time of the assault and with patrons spilling out from local nightclubs, it is more than likely someone heard or saw something,” Const. Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP said in a statement. “Investigators are interested in speaking with anyone who has information on the assault.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
