Some scary moments Friday morning along the Trans-Canada Highway in Saanich near the Burnside off-ramp after a vehicle caught fire, sending flames and plumes of black smoke into the air along the busy highway.

In dramatic videos captured by a CHEK News videographer, the vehicle can be seen on the shoulder of the TCH, behind a white truck, fully engulfed in flames as fire crews arrived on scene.

Other drivers can also be seen slowing down as they passed the raging fire.

It’s not yet clear what sparked the blaze, but a platoon commander with the Saanich Fire Department says it was a “standard car fire.”

The Saanich Police Department says it wasn’t called for assistance because the vehicle was off the road and not blocking traffic.

A police officer who happened to be in the area stopped to see if they could help, but fire crews already had the situation under control.

This is a developing story
