A new Royal Canadian Legion is being built in Esquimalt as part of a seniors home.

The ground was broken Wednesday on the new development. Esquimalt Dockyard Branch 172 of the Royal Canadian Legion will be part of the senior’s home called the Vista.

Once it’s complete, the 11-storey building will include 95 independent and assisted living apartments. It will also include 48 unites with specialized care for Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.

The top two floors will include 38 condos for sale.

“At the end of the day, it’s a win-win. Not only for the community but for the legion. So I think a lot of great things came out of it and it was totally worth it,” Jim Swanbeck from the Esquimalt Royal Canadian Legion said.

“It has a lot of great attributes. It’s in the core of Esquimalt. It’s on the crest of a hill, it gives opportunities for incredible views. And there’s certainly a need for senior housing in this community. So it was a no-brainer for us,” Jason David Craik with developer Avenir Senior Living said.

The building, located next to CFB Esquimalt, will be the tallest in the area.
