Police say a woman was punched and man stabbed by a stranger at this Saanich gas station after refusing to hand over a cigarette.

A suspect is in custody after a man and a woman were attacked at a gas station in Saanich early Thursday morning.

Saanich police say a 29-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman went to the Shell station at Douglas Street and Saanich Road at around 1 a.m.

As they left, a 25-year-old man, not known to them, approached them and asked for a cigarette, they refused and an argument ensued. That’s when police say the woman was punched in the face and her boyfriend, who stepped in to help her, was stabbed with a knife.

Officers found the injured man and woman at the nearby Red Lion Inn. He was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The woman suffered minor injuries.

The suspect was found in the Shell parking lot and arrested.

“He did remain there for whatever reason so officers were able to locate him,” Saanich police Sgt. Julie Fast said.

He is expected to be charged with aggravated assault, assault and robbery at a court appearance on Thursday.
