West Shore RCMP says a woman was taken to hospital after being discovered unconscious and laying in the middle of Island Highway in View Royal.

Police say a bystander found the woman near Wilfert Road and called the police.

Officers realized she was having a medical emergency and believed she was suffering from an opiate overdose.

Constable Nancy Saggar with West Shore RCMP says the officers called for an ambulance and in the meantime provided a dose of Narcan nasal spray.

Saggar says when an ambulance arrived, paramedics administered another dose of Narcan and the woman regained consciousness at the scene, before being taken to hospital for further assessment.

West Shore RCMP says Narcan counteracts the effects of opioids and is issued to all RCMP officers.

Police thanked the bystander for “being a good citizen and calling 911 for help.”
