A 48-year-old woman is dead following a crash in Union Bay last week.

According to the Comox Valley RCMP, a Nissan Pathfinder drove off and went down an embankment in the 5800-block of Island Highway South at around 11:40 a.m. on June 3, trapping a passenger.

Police say several witnesses rushed the scene and managed to lift the Pathfinder off of the passenger who was trapped.

The passenger — a 48-year-old woman — was then transported by air ambulance to a hospital in Victoria, where she died from her injuries on June 4.

British Columbia Coroners Service has confirmed with CHEK News that they are investigating the woman’s death.

Meanwhile, police say the driver of the vehicle sustained minor injuries and the cause of the crash is under investigation.

“The cause of this crash is still under investigation. Investigators are looking for witnesses who observed the collision, who observed the vehicle prior to the collision, or who may have dash-cam footage” said Const. Monika Terragni, Comox Valley RCMP media relations officer, in a press release.
