Nanaimo RCMP says the driver of a pickup truck hit a pedestrian in front of the Walmart in Nanaimo on March 21, 2024.

An 80-year-old woman has died after she was hit by the driver of a large pickup truck in the Nanaimo Walmart parking lot on Thursday afternoon.

Nanaimo RCMP says the incident happened around 1:40 p.m. and officers arrived on scene quickly.

The woman’s injuries were severe, and she was declared deceased at the scene. The BC Coroner’s Service attended and confirmed the woman’s death.

RCMP say the 21-year-old driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with police.

Police have ruled out alcohol and drugs as contributing factors, and the truck has been seized and is expected to undergo a mechanical inspection.

Nanaimo RCMP is asking anyone who saw the incident or has dashcam video to contact the non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.

BC Emergency Health Services says two primary care paramedic teams, an advanced paramedic team, a critical care paramedic and a supervisor attended the scene.

“Paramedics provided emergency medical treatment but the patient was not transported from the scene,” Brian Twaites, BCEHS Paramedic Public Information Officer said.

The BC Coroner Service confirmed it had been notified of the incident, but was unable to share any further information.
