The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is asking for witnesses to a September 2020 arrest by Victoria Police where one man was injured.

The IIO says the arrest happened on Sept. 26, 2020, but it was only notified of the injuries on Nov. 11, 2023.

The injured man told the IIO that around 10 p.m. on Sept. 26, 2020, he was arrested by Victoria Police officers in the hallway of his apartment building in the 3000 block of Blanshard Street.

He says he went to the hospital after the arrest and had sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries.

The IIO is now investigating the injuries, including determining whether the injuries meet the threshold for serious harm, which is defined in the Police Act as an injury that may result in death, may cause serious disfigurement or may cause substantial loss or impairment of mobility.

After that, the IIO would work to determine what role police actions or inactions may have played in the injury.

The IIO did not provide information on the injury the man says he sustained.
