Wires came down Thursday morning on Alpha Street in Victoria, causing a small fire at the base of a hydro pole.

Victoria fire went to a business in the 600-block of Alpha Street where power lines came down, narrowly missing an occupied work vehicle.

A Victoria fire official says three workers of the Colonial Countertops business were inside a van Thursday morning when they heard an explosion right above them, and wires believed to be live came down, landing just a couple metres away from the vehicle.

A small fire at the base of a nearby power pole started, but responding Victoria firefighters let it burn out and taped off the area to not let anyone near the scene for safety reasons.

No one was hurt, and BC Hydro turned off power to the neighbouring businesses.

Hydro workers have since isolated the issue to the building where the wires came down and will be repairing the damage today.

Victoria fire says a new hydro pole was installed Wednesday night, and workers said there was some electrical tripping early this morning.

Officials say the wires came down when bigger machines and saws were powered on.

Although there was a fire at the base of the pole, the only damage reported is to the downed wire.
