Snow in northeastern BC closes provincial park

Officials have shut down Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park in northeastern B-C after as much as 35-centimetres of snow fell over the weekend.

A notice on the BC Parks website reads “In the interest of public safety, BC Parks has closed this park until further notice.”

“A cruel reminder that this was the last day of our Summer Holiday Road Trip,” wrote Georgi Pearson on Facebook on Sunday.

“We woke up this morning to breaking birch and aspens and a campground closure due to said falling trees at Liard Hot Springs. Snow didn’t stop until an hour west of Watson Lake.”

More snow is on the way today, but temperatures are expected to climb to 18 Celsius by Wednesday, so it won’t last long.

The park is home to the largest natural hot springs in Canada
