Environment Canada has issued a wind warning for large swaths of Vancouver Island on Saturday.

At 9 a.m. Saturday, the weather office said winds between 70 km/h and 90 km/h were expected over Vancouver Island and the Southern Gulf Islands on Saturday morning.

Winds are expected ease in the afternoon before returning to sweep over Victoria and East Vancouver Island, ranging from Courtenay up to Campbell River.

On Saturday night, the winds are expect to reach 80 km/h to 100 km/h, starting late in the evening and continuing into Sunday morning before dying down.

“Areas adjacent to the Strait of Georgia have the potential for minor coastal flooding at high tide on Sunday morning,” said Environment Canada on Saturday morning.

“High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break,” it added. “Utility outages may occur.”

The strong winds caused BC Ferries to cancel several sailings between Victoria and Vancouver, and Nanaimo and Vancouver, on Saturday.
