A wind warning is in effect for Greater Victoria and the Southern Gulf Islands.

The wind warning for Greater Victoria has ended but there is still one in effect for the Southern Gulf Islands.

Environment Canada said an intense cold front approached the B.C. south coast earlier this morning.

Westerly 70 km/h winds, gusting to 90 km/h, were seen around Greater Victoria, with the strongest winds being felt near the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The wind warning was lifted for the area at around 5 p.m.

Over the western sections of Metro Vancouver, as well as the Southern Gulf Islands, southerly winds have shifted sharply northwest 50 to 70 km/h winds with gusts up to 90 km/h near the water.

Winds in those areas are expected to ease by the evening as the front moves eastward.

Environment Canada is reminding residents that loose objects may be tossed around in the wind, causing injury or damage. Tree branches may also break.

The winds have led to several ferry cancellations and the closure of Stanley Park in Vancouver.
