Wind Cries Mary to replace Sherwood restaurant in downtown Victoria

Wind Cries Mary, a popular Victoria restaurant, is expanding with a sister site in the current Sherwood cafe and bar location.

Sherwood is slated to close down Friday, Sept. 29, due to issues it says were exacerbated by the pandemic.

Last week, Sherwood announced its upcoming closure, saying it was grateful to its customers and staff who had “done the work of heroes for way too long.”

“Ultimately, an offer has come in from some truly great local people who will take over the space with some fresh ideas and more importantly, the needed energy and resources to make sure this amazing community space continues,” wrote the restaurant’s owner in a social media post on Sept. 18.

On Thursday, Wind Cries Mary announced it would be opening a new restaurant called Rudi at the Sherwood location at 710 Pandora Ave.

“We feel very honored and privileged to be coming into a space that has been so lovingly cared for by such a fantastic team of people,” wrote the restaurant in a social media post.

No details have been released about Rudi yet, but Wind Cries Mary says more information will be “coming soon.”

The restaurant is located in Bastion Square in downtown Victoria.

It focuses on sourcing local ingredients, particularly from Island supplies, including farmers, anglers, craft brewers and winemakers.

“Our goal has always been to support the farms around us, using ‘in season’ ingredients, sourced as close as possible,” reads the Wind Cries Mary website.
