It was a particularly pleasant surprise from some on Salt Spring Island on Friday.
Ken Burton of North Saanich was visiting Ganges today when the killer whales turned up in the harbour around 1:30 p.m.
Burton says he was told by others there that orcas visiting the harbour area is not common.
He also mentioned that some visitors from the UK got an unexpected surprise, having never seen an orca in the wild before.
Earlier, Patty Ripley captured video of a pod of orcas heading towards Ganges.
“Wow!!! Lunchtime pod of whales visited! That’s a first,” she wrote.
