View Street is now two-way traffic for drivers for the entire length of the street.

Parts of the street were changed to one-way in 1973. Traffic at Blanshard moved in one-direction, then the direction changed at Douglas as noted in the map below.

Starting today, the street will now carry two-way traffic the length of the street.

A spokesperson for the city said in an email this change was to make traffic along the street more consistent.

“Allowing for two-way traffic not only improves access to Government Street but it makes View Street more consistent with the rest of the corridor which is already two-way,” the email says. “This change will also make it easier to get in and out of the View Street Parkade and the Bay Centre Parkade creating better connections in the downtown core. City staff are monitoring View Street traffic to address any issues and ensure optimal traffic flow.”

Buses can turn left from Blanshard to View Street any time of day. Northbound traffic can make the same turn, except from 4 to 6 p.m. where only buses can turn left.

There continues to be no right hand or left hand turns onto View Street from Douglas Street.
