A suspected medical incident led to a six-car crash on the Trans-Canada Highway on Tuesday morning.

Paul Hurst, View Royal’s fire chief, says someone travelling south bound on the Trans-Canada Highway is expected to have suffered a medical incident.

The driver then crashed into another vehicle and four other drivers ended up crashing.

An elderly man and woman were trapped in their vehicle and needed to be extricated from it.

Hurst says the vehicle of the couple suffered extensive damage in the crash, then further damage as the pair were cut out of the vehicle.

The elderly man and woman were the only ones injured in the crash, and they were brought to nearby Victoria General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Hurst.

Hurst says paramedics were the first on the scene, partially by luck.

The paramedics were at the nearby Victoria General Hospital heard the crash, and went to respond, even before anyone called it in.

Hurst says firefighters received the call at 9:49 a.m.

The road was closed for around one hour.

West Shore RCMP also responded to the crash and is investigating, and Langford Fire responded as part of the mutual aid agreement West Shore fire departments have with one another.
