Police on the West Shore say a driver is facing hefty fines after they were caught going 75 kilometres per hour over the speed limit.

A West Shore RCMP Traffic Unit officer was patrolling the Trans-Canada Highway near Helmcken Road in View Royal around midnight on March 4, when a driver passed them at a high rate of speed, states a news release Wednesday.

RCMP say a police laser indicated the vehicle, a 2024 Hyundai Elantra, was travelling at 165 km/hr in a 90 km/hr zone.

They say the driver was pulled over and issued violation tickets for excessive speeding and failure to produce a driver’s license, and the vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days.

They also presented the Mountie with a photograph of their driver’s licence instead of a physical copy, which is “not accepted under the law,” adds West Shore RCMP Cpl. Nancy Saggar. She says drivers must carry a physical copy when operating a motor vehicle.

In total, the driver is facing more than $1,000 in fines.
