View Royal has given a $30,000 grant to help recruit a doctor at GROW Health.

The Town of View Royal has awarded a $30,000 grant to rapidly recruit a foreign-trained physician amid a doctor shortage.

The grant was awarded to the Westshore Primary Care Society (WPCS) on Tuesday, which will be used to assist GROW Health, a local family practice and maternity clinic.

“The shortage of primary care physicians is one of the greatest challenges facing residents of our town and region,” said Mayor Sid Tobias in a press release.

GROW Health lost three of its nine doctors in 2022 which says it serves 7.200 patients. The society’s president says this grant helps address an urgent need.

“It has become a regular occurrence that women are delivering babies with no prenatal care and hundreds of patients, many of them in View Royal, are now without a family doctor,” said WPCS president Dr. Spencer Cleave.

The grant money will also help the clinic increase its patient care capacity.
