The Town of View Royal has approved rezoning for a former youth detention centre.

The facility had been operated by Our Place for the past couple of years as low-barrier transitional housing but it closed in March. When it was operated by Our Place, it was called Choices.

The unanimous decision at the View Royal council meeting on Tuesday night will allow Our Place Society to move forward with plans to create a long-term therapeutic recovery community at the property at 94 Talcott Road.

Unlike the former Choices facility, the new community will be a closed one, which means participants will not be allowed to leave the site or use drugs or alcohol.

The recovery program will start with 12 male residents who would stay between 12 and 24 months. They will learn life skills, coping mechanisms and will receive treatment-both mentally and physically.

The provincial government has already committed $4.7 million to the program. Our Place will start accepting male clients for the community sometime next year.
