Victoria receives another blast of winter weather, snow

For the second time in a week, Victorians woke up to a winter wonderland.

An overnight snowfall had residents breaking out the shovels and while some were digging out, others were hitting the hills around Victoria for some sledding.

“I think the snow is nice, especially because here in Victoria we usually only get it like once or twice a year,” says one sledder.

Throughout the capital region roads were blanketed in snow, causing hazardous conditions for drivers and keeping road crews busy.

“Last night we started to see an accumulation around nine pm and our crews were focusing on our priority one routes,’ says City of Victoria Public Works manager Jason Adair.

“They continued right through this morning and they’re back out there again.”

The snowy streets didn’t stop members of the Vancouver Island Toyota 4×4 Club from driving healthcare workers to and from work across the Island.

“It’s the second year we’ve been doing it, more so even this year,” says volunteer driver Veronique Moquin.

“I just really enjoy giving rides and helping people, I had a surgery in November so I think it’s just my way to give back to the community.”

The ride-giving is a full family affair, with Moquin’s two kids accompanying their mom on her trips.

“It’s really nice to get people safely to their house or back at their work,” says Moquin’s son Evan.

“My best part was when I had a ride when someone gave donuts and cookies with chips,” adds Moquin’s daughter Hailie.

The cold will stick around until the weekend when rain and temperatures above freezing will return.
