Victoria police are seeking witnesses to a fatal collision that prompted officers to close a stretch of Douglas Street and investigate for several hours.
Around 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, VicPD officers were called to the intersection of Douglas Street and Pembroke Street for a report of a collision involving a motorcycle and a pickup truck, according to police in a news release.
VicPD say the motorcyclist died on scene.
“It is believed that the motorcyclist, who was travelling northbound on Douglas Street, veered into oncoming traffic, striking the pickup truck that was travelling southbound,” said police.
Following the collision, a CHEK News reporter captured video of what appeared to be a body covered by a blanket. The white pickup truck and blue motorcycle were behind police tape, and debris was all over the road.
“Bystanders and B.C. Emergency Health Services paramedics rendered lifesaving efforts, but the motorcyclist succumbed to their injuries at the scene,” said VicPD Wednesday.
“Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and those affected by the incident.”
Police took to X (formerly Twitter) just before 5 p.m. Tuesday, saying the collision occurred in the 2100-block of Douglas Street. They said traffic was being diverted off Douglas in both directions from Princess Avenue to Caledonia Avenue.
VicPD say traffic analysts were on scene gathering evidence, and the road was eventually cleared and reopened around 10 p.m.
Traffic analysts are asking witnesses who have not yet spoken with police or anyone with dashcam footage of the collision to call E-Comm’s report desk at (250) 995-7654 extension 1.
CHEK News has reached out to the BC Coroners Service for more information.
