Police in Victoria are asking the public to help identify a man accused of stabbing a loss prevention officer with a screwdriver in an attempted theft from a downtown business.

It happened at around 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, at a business in the 900-block of Yates Street, according to Victoria police.

The security officer confronted the man while he was allegedly trying to steal from the business, and the man then challenged him to a fight, police said.

When the officer tried to apprehend the suspect, the man allegedly stabbed him with a screwdriver, then ran away.

Police say fortunately, the guard was wearing a protecting vest that prevented serious injury.

The suspect is described as white, 5’9″, slim build and was reportedly wearing a baseball hat with a red brim as well as a black jacket over a grey hooded sweater and blue jeans.

Victoria police have released surveillance images of the suspect in hopes someone can help identify him.

Anyone with information is asked to call VicPD at 250-995-7654 extension 1 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
