Investigators are looking for witnesses and a suspect after a woman reportedly hit a five-year-old boy in the face in downtown Victoria in what police say was a random assault.

The attack happened at 11:20 a.m. Monday, when a woman and her three kids were walking in the 1700-block of Government Street, according to police.

A woman she didn’t know then approached and struck one of her children, a five-year-old boy, without provocation, police said, adding the disturbing incident happened on his fifth birthday.

The mother fled to a safe location with her kids and reported the assault to police. Officers who arrived on the scene could not find the woman, described as 30 to 40 years old with shoulder-length brownish-blonde hair, standing around 5’6″ with a slim build.

Police say she was wearing light-coloured blue jeans and carried a brown leather bag. They said the woman was reported to appear disheveled and agitated, was yelling in the street and police also believe the woman was intoxicated by drugs.

Anyone who has any information on the incident is asked to call police at 250-995-7654 extension 1 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
