Victoria police looking to speak with victims after man charged in Capital City Center Hotel arson

Victoria police say a man has been charged after an arson at the Capital City Center Hotel on Nov. 5.  and police are still looking to speak with victims.

Police say they believe they have not yet been in contact with everyone who was injured in the incident and they need to speak with them.

Victoria police responded to the fire in the 1900-block of Douglas Street shortly before 8:30 p.m. after a man in crisis contacted police.

Police said while officers were on scene, they saw a fire in a suite, which prompted an emergency police entry.

Officers evacuated nearly 100 tenants from the building while the Victoria Fire Department fought the fire.

During the evacuation, officers arrested a man who allegedly started the fire.

That man, Matthew Brian Petker, 32, has been charged with arson with disregard for human life and arson causing property damage.

Five people, including the accused, were transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Several others, including officers on scene, were treated for non-life-threatening injuries related to smoke inhalation.
