The Victoria Police Department has helped return a lost bird to its rightful owner through the use of social media.

Officers with the VicPD Community Services Division (CSD) say they utilized the VicPDCanada Instagram account and Community Engagement Team to help reunite a lost bird with its owner after the bird was discovered alone late Thursday night in Victoria.

According to police, officers were conducting foot patrols in the area of View and Government Street when they were approached by a group of tourists.

The tourists had located a bright yellow pet bird, which they handed off to police officers in order to help locate the owner.

The bird, later identified as a yellow Lutino Indian Ringneck, perched on a police officer’s shoulder in order for VicPD to take photos and share them on social media in search for the owner.

The photographs were posted on VicPD’s social media accounts, including our VicPDCanada TwitterVictoria FacebookEsquimalt Division Facebook and VicPDCanada Instagram accounts.

Police say that it was only a short time after posting that the bird’s owner spotted their pet on Instagram and contacted the Report Desk to arrange a safe return.
