Victoria Police arrest suspect after man with Down's Syndrome 'suddenly attacked' on Dallas Road

Victoria Police officers have arrested a suspect after he “suddenly attacked” a man with Down’s Syndrome along Dallas Road over the weekend.

According to a report, the incident took place shortly after 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 17 near Camas Circle along Dallas Road.

Patrol officers were called to the area for a report of a fight and, when officers arrived, they located a man with Down’s Syndrome who had suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Passersby who were in the area were assisting the man when police arrived on the scene.

“The injured man reported he had been suddenly attacked by a man he did not know. The suspect fled when a passerby intervened to end the assault,” reads a statement from Victoria Police.

Patrol officers immediately launched a search and located the suspect nearby, arresting him for assault.

When the officers took the suspect into custody the man made concerning statements, prompting the officers to transport him to the hospital for a mental health assessment.

The man was held in hospital under the Mental Health Act and will face recommended charges of assault.

This file remains under investigation.
